Pittsburgh, PA — January 12, 2026 — NeuroAxis Rehabilitation Services announced today that it has added the ARC-EX® System from ONWARD Medical, becoming one of the first outpatient rehabilitation providers in Western Pennsylvania to offer this FDA-approved, non-invasive therapy for people living with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). ARC-EX is the first and only FDA-approved non-invasive spinal cord stimulation system clinically shown to improve hand strength and sensation in individuals with SCI. For many people who were told recovery options were limited after the early stages of injury, ARC-EX offers renewed hope for meaningful, functional, gains. "At Neuro Axis, our focus is always on what matters most to the person in front of us," said Kelsey Harris, Owner of NeuroAxis Rehabilitation Services. "ARC-EX allows us to pair cutting-edge neuroscience with compassionate, individualized therapy to help people pursue greater independence and quality of life."
The ARC-EX System delivers programmed electrical stimulation through the skin to targeted areas of the spinal cord using electrodes placed at the back of the neck. Unlike surgically implanted devices, ARC-EX requires no surgery and is used alongside task-specific rehabilitation guided by trained neurologic therapists. Clinical evidence supporting ARC-EX includes results from the Up-LIFT clinical study, published in Nature Medicine, which showed that 90% of participants improved in upper limb strength or function, while 87% reported improvements in quality of life. Participants also reported reduced muscle spasms, improved sleep, and better upper body sensation. Regaining hand and arm function is consistently identified as the top priority for people with SCI due to its direct impact on independence in daily activities such as eating, dressing, and personal care.
Kathleen Schweikart sustained a C6- C7 incomplete spinal cord injury from a car accident 2 years ago and, "Initially after the accident, the only thing I could really do was to move and utilize my thumbs." She has recently began using the ARC-EX at NeuroAxis Rehabilitation Services and stated, "I am very pleased with the amount of improvement my hands have made with the ARC-EX and I look forward to having continued improvement as I continue to use the device." "Functional gains like these can be life-changing," said Taylor Bellan, Kathleen Schweikart's occupational therapist at NeuroAxis Rehabilitation Services. "When someone can do more for themselves, it restores confidence, dignity and possibility. Since using the ARC-EX, Kathy has shown improvements with her ability to button a shirt and manage her own medications. Her core stability has significantly improved which has helped her with getting dressed and getting out of bed since using the ARC-EX."
